So, you might be wondering, where did these ACORN Character's come from? Well, it's like this: a long time ago, in the mid 80's, when I decided to become a world famous writer; I had only one problem. I couldn't write. At least not more than one sentence. I could write a moving one sentence. And a lot of moving one sentences. I just couldn't string them together. So, not wanting to let my faults hold me back, I set out to find a publisher who would buy a bunch of unconnected sentences. I found one by looking in THE WRITERS MARKET (a book that is produced every year by WRITERS DIGEST). That year, there was a listing for HALLMARK. I called the editor listed and told her that she probably would love to see my work, because I was going to be World Famous, quite soon, for my writing. She laughed and said, "Oh really?" I assured her it was so. Then she asked where I'd gone to school to learn the art of Greeting Card writing. I told her, I hadn't. She asked me what other Companies had purchased my work. I told her I'd been saving myself for Hallmark. She said, she didn't think they would be interested.
About a half hour later, she was still on the phone and had agreed to at least look at my work. With that first submission I became the first Freelance Writer in the History of Hallmark ever to make a sale on a first submission. (I am certain this all would never have happened if that first contact Editor: Nancy Saulsbury, hadn't clicked with me, on the phone.) Very soon, HALLMARK began sending me "needs lists" and I started writing for The Charles Schultz PEANUTS line. (He did his own comic strip but gave approval on the HALLMARK greeting cards). Then one day I called up Charles Schultz and told him who I was (somebody with a dream) and asked if I could meet him in person. Since we lived within hours of each other, he said, "Let's do lunch". We did. And he said, "Marsha, you have a style. You should design your own Characters." But, alas...I explained to him...I couldn't draw. Then, years later, I read "Drawing from the Right Side of your brain". And I followed the book's suggestions. And that's where ACORNS: nuts with potential™ came from.
Well that's the condensed version anyway. The real story didn't happen quite this fast. For the ACORNS: nuts with potential™, you could say, it took about 17 years for them to be an overnight success.
Look for World Wide Release in Fall 2004.
